This project has been on my to-sew pile since the beginning of September when I was sketching out ideas for winter clothes for S. I actually bought the flecked grey material for making H’s school pinafores with, but when pre-washing it became obvious that it must be a silk/wool mix which didn’t seem the most practical choice for a hard-wearing uniform. I picked out some polyester drill for the pinafores and saved this material for a dress for myself and this bloomers and skirt set for S.
The skirt is made with lots of rectangles (I’ll post the measurements in another post when I’ve made a version for H too), and features box pleats on the front and a gathered elasticated waist at the back. The straps or braces are crossed at the back (I sewed them fixed at the point of crossing to prevent them slipping off the shoulder) and are completely detachable.
The bloomers share the same set of braces and again feature a flat waistband at the front with pleat details and a gathered, elasticated back. They are also elasticated on the leg openings – though the style would work just as well with ordinary hems.
The braces are fixed with button holes in the flat-front waistband of both the bloomers and skirt and on small buttons on the inside of the back elasticated waistband.
Such a great idea to have detachable braces. I have the pattern for a lovely skirt ( http://www.madeit-patterns.com/?product=the-bjork-skirt ) that has braces, now I’m just going to have to steal you idea of making them detachable 🙂
Cute pattern and it’ll be more versatile with detachable straps. – Look forward to seeing it! Is it possible I’m more addicted to grey than you?
Maybe at the moment you are, recently I’ve been singing the navy blues 😉
P.S. Those little red shoes are just perfect for that outfit.
adorable!
I love both of these! They are so adorable.
Thank you!
Oh wow this is gorgeous! Do you have a pattern shop or sell your patterns? I love her shoes too, do you mind me asking where they are from? xo
Thanks -the little red shoes are hand me downs from a friend. She bought them secondhand but they are originally from the UK shoe shop Startrite. The little trainers were picked up from another car boot sale in France – thrifty!
As to the patterns – I don’t currently sell them anywhere. The only ones available are the free ones on this site. I’m getting more experienced at cutting patterns but have not yet mastered turning them in to pdf and graded versions, plus that stage takes a long time and sewing is currently an evening hobby not my day job. That said, the striped dress and tunic pattern is close to being done in sizes 18mths and 2-3yrs..
Love both! and I love the gray with the red shoes.
Me too, but sadly she’s already outgrown them…
