Although we’re only half way through the school holidays, at Madeit Patterns they’ve been thinking ahead and have organised a ‘back to school’ tour.
Many of those taking part are international seamsters who don’t have the constraints of school uniforms to deal with so there should be a colourful collection of posts.
Whilst my eldest’s school uniform policy is actually fairly relaxed and allows for jeans, my youngest will be starting at a new school, with more traditional uniform policy, in September so is definitely in need of a few items.
Petal Fold Culottes
Finding fabric that is the right shade of school uniform grey proved trickier than expected, but luckily the Clothhouse Warehouse shop sale delivered some lovely wool fabric in the perfect shade. I decided to pair it with the Petal Fold Culottes pattern as I thought it would make a practical but smart option – the look of a skirt with a smart flat waistband at the front, with the practicality of shorts and a elasticated waistband at the back.I have made the pattern three times before as a playsuit which you can see here and here. This time I used the separates add on making an age 4 but grading to 5 in length. They turned out to be a great fit so I will probably end up making another pair or two before she starts in September.Using some scraps of leftover fabric (which I’m hoping will still pass the uniform inspectors) with its slight check, I also made a pinafore dress using the Lolah Apron Dress pattern.I made one of these for my eldest to wear for school six months ago and it’s such a well used item I knew it would be worth making for my youngest too, although for her I omitted the pocket to make it a little more uniform.
I managed to make a bit of an error putting the side snaps in slightly out of line so there is a bit of bunching on the side seams. As it’s not a particularly easy problem to fix, and in all probability the whole thing will be coated in paint within a week of starting school, I’m going to leave it as is.And with that the preschool years are behind us….
As part of the tour Madeit patterns are offering 20% of all their patterns with the code btsmbt so if you’re inspired to do some back to school sewing now might be a good time.
